The Revenge of the Cricket

by Rena Sherwood

Good morning, everyone!Well, I smashed that cricket with an aquarium rock three nights ago and thought all my cricket-related problems were over. They’ve only just begun.

Apparantly this cricket has lots of relatives who want revenge. Since a cricket can lay up to 1500 eggs at once, I think I’m screwed. One waited until 4am this morning (on the day I have a ton of work of to do) to yell “CR-CR-CRICKET, dammit!” and keep doing so every ten minutes for three or four hours straight. They also waited for me to take out my earplugs, because my left ear has gotten too sore to have a plug in. No, they didn’t go for me right away — they waited for a night where I was desperate for the sleep and my ears were too sore for the earplugs.

Why Am I Going On About This Cricket?

There actually is a meathod to my madness. Almost all week long, I’ve been posting about sleep deprivation headaches and how to deal with them. One of the most maddening things about sleep deprivation headaches is that often they are caused by circumstances that you have very little control over. (I can’t find the crazed cricket bent on revenge, for example).

Although I can’t change my circumstances, I can change my reactions to those circumstances. I could’ve spent the wee hours of the “CRICKET”-filled moring fretting and swearing and promising death to all crickets. This time around, I lay in bed snuggled next to my dog (who has no concept that noisy crickets should be hunted down) and made up stories about what kind of movies a cricket would make. Would they make “Death Wish”? Probably. They’d probably get the cockroaches to fund it and the fireflies for lighting. Somehow, this seemed humorous to me and I laughed.

In laughter, we can relax. In just the tiny bit of relaxation I derived from thinking very silly thoughts about the cricket entertainment industry, I managed to fall back asleep…until the next cry of “CRICKET.”

And yes, I do currently have a sleep deprivation headache, but at least it’s not as bad as it was over the weekend. Hey, every little bit helps.

Come on, winter!
