Linkfest & Story Updates
by
It’s time once again for your general smorgasbord of links from all around the web, as well as some follow ups to stories mentioned in previous blog posts. It also means I’m having yet another attack of short-attention span blogger’s syndrome and a cranky computer. My pain is your gain. Hope you enjoy it.
- Janet Jackson is back on tour and has received some very good reviews. She was sidelined for a while with a very nasty kind of migraine, vestibular migraine, which causes vertigo as well as pain, nausea, sensitivity to lights and noise.
- In Pennsylvania, Democratic Govenor Ed Rendell has tried to get the state congress to reconveine and pass another version of a health care bill for uninsured adults because of Obama’s election. Unfortunately, most of the Republicans in the state have decided that they will not attend, thus leaving the bill twisting in the wind until next spring. I would have a link here to this story but it’s apparently not up on the Philadelphia Inquirer’s site yet. Oh, well.
- From the “More is Not Always Better” Department: Narcotic drugs (legal or otherwise) can actually worsen migraine, according to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which studied over 8100 people with migraines for one year. Narcotics are often prescribed for their painkilling effect. Over the counter painkillers and triptans did not seem to worsen migraines. Narcotics include codeine and Oxycontin.
- An interesting story from RainGem over at Migraine News Blog (”now with kitten pictures”) — Have Migraine? Try Aspirin, Says Atheist Billboard President. Now, how can you resist that title? You know you want to read it — you know you do!
- What IS Migraine (the Scientific Story) by James is one of those articles I really wish I had written. Oh well, James beat me to it. One of the reasons why migraine is so tricky to treat is that we really don’t know just what it is (besides extrememly painful). James even researched in Scientific America for the article, so prepared to be impressed.
- As a general resource, MAGNUM has a page of links entitled Where to Turn to for Help, which is about … well…where to turn to for help with getting treatment for your migraines.
